DISTANCE LEARNING SUPPORT
General:
(1) The University is going to finish out the Spring semester on a distance-learning basis. They are even talking about the summer continuing on this basis, but that hasn't been finalized (I hope they do not...update, crap they did).
(2) We are going to have to finish up as best we can. Converting to distance-learning for these classes on short notice late in the semester is not an optimal solution, but we will muddle through.
(3) I'm going to cut back on homework. Finals will be take-home (what else?) and essentially be very critically graded extended homeworks.
(4) The University is considering giving students the option for pass/fail grading this semester. You will hear directly from the administration about this. I don't see an advantage, personally, since if you are doing well you would lose the leverage on your GPA, and if you are doing poorly, well..a D or F is a fail anyway.
(5) I am very sympathetic to requests for a grade of Incomplete. Normally these need to be reasonably documented. I realize students may be traumatized over the entire corona virus situation, they may not have the resources at home to fully participate in an online learning environment, and they are being forced into a learning mode that they might otherwise never have selected. I have been forced into a teaching mode that I would not normally choose, so I feel your pain.
(6) So far the majority of students have risen to the occasion and I have received most assignments on time. I'm not going to be a stickler on homework submission dates, but you do need to get it to me approximately on time. The final will still be due on the original date, and this has to be a hard deadline in order for me to get everything graded and turned in by the due date for grades.
(7) I realize you are now stuck with reading our textbooks as your primary source of knowledge. I will post some third party videos that cover the topics we are studying... some are there, more to come...and I plan to do some voice-over power points or written notes to make up for the lectures you are not hearing from me. These will be available as soon as I can get to them.
(8) As always, feel free to e-mail me with questions on the text or homework.
Specific:
Calculus 2 - Study guide and final soon
Abstract Algebra 2 - Study guide and final soon
Functional Analysis - No more homework....just a final soon...I'm sorry virus situation destroyed what I wanted to do for the rest of the course. Read the rest of the book. It is a good introduction and background if you are going to keep going with analysis.
